Designer Notes
Dusty is worked from the top down in one piece using short-row shaping on the shoulders. The cardigan features an off-center, one-button closure on the front with a lace border reminiscent to hops growing on tall frames.A-line shaping worked a distance away from sides on the Fronts and the Back gives this cardigan a sophisticated drape.
The Sleeves are worked by picking up stitches around the armholes and short-row shaping is used to achieve the look of a traditional set-in sleeve. Borders are worked in I-cord for a nice, clean look. The sample is worked in Mad Tosh DK Twist, which is a hand-dyed yarn. With this or any hand-dyed yarn, I suggest alternating skeins every 2 rows to eliminate any noticeable color differences between the skeins.
The inspiration comes from my husband, and his zeal for making a really good beer at home. There is a smallish craft brewery in Northern Indiana called 3 Floyds, and they make a really tasty, hoppy beer called Zombie Dust. It is complex in flavor, with a good mix of hops, including my favorite citra hops. My husband makes a flattering imitation, and his version is Walker Dust.
Dusty (the cardigan) also has some complexity at the beginning, but the result is a well fitting cardigan. The short rows on the shoulders and in the sleeves insure that good fit, the a-line shaping makes the cardigan flattering, and the asymmetrical fronts make it interesting!
The pattern was tech edited by Amy Johnson, photographed by Mary Feeney and test knitted by a wonderful group of generous knitters. Thank you to all of you for your help.
