Dustland Cowl
This cozy cowl is knit in the round and seamed together with a half twist for a moebius style tube. The textured fabric is easy to knit, making this project suitable for beginner knitters. Choose between a small and large size and select a solid or semi-solid color to emphasize the textured stitch details. You can easily customize the length of the fabric by knitting more or fewer pattern repeats to achieve a size that’s perfect for you. This pattern is written for sport weight yarn, but fingering and DK weight yarns would be suitable for this cowl as well.
Sizes
Small (Large)
The small size is a tube that goes around the neck. The large size is a moebius-style scarf that wraps around your neck.
Finished Measurements
24 (46)″ / 61 (117)cm circumference. 20 (20)″ / 51 (51)cm wide. Measurements taken after blocking.
Yarn
Sport weight
You can use fingering weight for a lighter fabric or DK weight for a heavier fabric. The length of your knitting is customizable. A fingering weight version may result in a cowl with less width. A DK weight version may result in a cowl with more width. If you select a fingering or DK weight yarn, then use a needle size that you like with that yarn weight. I recommend aiming for a fabric that is not too loose or drapey, so the fabric has a firm structure to it.
Yardage
Approximately 500 (1000)yds / 457 (914)m
Shown in
De Rerum Natura Ulysse (100% Merino Wool; 202yds / 185m per 50g ball)
The Small Size is shown in the Printemps (green) colorway.
The Large Size is shown in the Biche (sand) colorway.
Needles
US 5 / 3.75mm circular in 40″ / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge
Magic loop method is used for knitting in the round.
Notions
1 stitch marker, tapestry needle
Gauge
22 sts & 34 rnds = 4″ / 10cm in pattern after blocking
Stitch gauge is most important, because the length is customizable. So, if you just knit a plain moss stitch swatch, that will be a reliable gauge swatch.
