Idea for this caplet came about while at my local hang out, town of Banff. In an amazing boutique I saw it !!! A knitted circular cabled caplet. Obvious thought, I can make my own and so I did!
I played with cables and gauge until I was happy. It’s the simplicity, purity and repetition I love. Circular yokes are always pretty irresistible.
Yarn: From a small farm, straight from the source
https://www.phibetapaca.com/ from her Sunflower alpaca
fingering,150 grams, about 100 yards per skein for body I used 3 skeins
http://www.lecouchetat.fr 50 grams, about 130 yards per ball I used 1 ball for collar and button band. (I picked this up on our recent trip to France)
Note about fiber: Both yarns used are from a small supplier. They labeled their yarn as “fingering”, I feel they both were closer to Sport or DK. I encourage you to use natural fiber, maybe even home spun. The slight variations to thickness, add dimensional quality of this knit. Alpaca/Lama is a perfect choice, as it gives a little “furriness” and fluff to the finished garment. I think, that adds to the overall quality and dreaminess of this finished capelet. I imagine “Dreamy”, knitted in white, on a snowy, winter day draping shoulders of a young bride to be…. Maybe someone will take me up on this “vision”??
Sizing: Based on neck circumference as Body width stays the same,
S, M, L
See schematics for more accurate measurement’s
last picture
Needle: Size 3 US (I used circulars) 3.25 mm, 24-inch cord
Gauge: not crucial, as you can fit this knit as you go, (hard to accurately measure gauge as cables are knitted sideways with German short row shaping)
Educated guess: 34 st / 36 rows in a 4 inch/10 cm blocked garment
Impossible to knit a starting swatch
Notes about construction:
Knitted flat, with German short row shaping, to form a circular yoke with cables running horizontally along the body.
Neck collar is added second, by picking up stitches along the neck edge.
Button band is kitted last by picking up stitches along the side edges. Buttons are sewn and extra garter ridge is knitted and sewn together to close on the “wrong side” for invisible button attachment. Same for “icord” hooks.
Cables are both charted and written out for ease of knitting.
Collar pattern is a 12 st repeat.
Skills needed: cables, chart reading recommended, German short rows, picking up stitches, simple sewing with darning needle.
