The Dragonsbane Shawl was designed in honor of the 25th anniversary of Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede, the first book in her Enchanted Forest Chronicles, which I’ve loved ever since I discovered them at the age of 8. A plant called dragonsbane plays an important role in the plot, and I’ve tried to echo its spiky purple leaves in the lace pattern and the edging of the shawl.

This small shawl is knitted from the point up, shaped with yarn over increases at each edge. The border is knitted on sideways after the body of the shawl is complete.

NOTES:

The shawl is worked in sock yarn or other fingering weight yarn. It can be made larger if desired; finish with Row 12 or 24 of Section 1 or Row 12, 24, or 36 of Section 2 to ensure that you have the right multiple of sts (4+1) for the border. Adding more than one repeat to the size described in the pattern may require buying more yarn.
