Nikata’s Tale, Part II

No humans had seen a dragon for hundreds of years. The few dragons left had wisely learned to find desolate locations to hide when the humans had started actively hunting them, out of fear, conquest, or greed for their scales, hearts, and horns. One of Nikata’s favorite places was a canyon surrounded on all sides by very steep walls. He had thought there was no way for a human to even reach it. But apparently this particular human was exceptionally resourceful. For there he stood, frozen in shock at what he was seeing.

Nikata attempted to form human words, which felt very awkward in his mouth. “I will not harm you,” he tried. He was sure the boy had never seen a dragon before. It was likely he didn’t even believe in dragons; most humans these days didn’t. In fact, Nikata’s parents had discouraged him from learning any of what they considered the “grotesque” human language. But he had always enjoyed listening to his grandmother’s wistful stories about her interactions with humans when she was young. Nikata could tell the boy’s sense of self-preservation was warring with his curiosity…

The Design:
The Dragon Lace Hat is a quick and easy knit, great for gift giving! There are instructions for two different sizes: a fitted beanie and a looser slouchy. It’s knit from the bottom up, with a simple but engaging lace pattern and easy decreases on the crown that form a five-pointed (beanie) or six-pointed (slouchy) star.

Yarn Used in Sample: Beanie: Lion Brand Heartland, Glacier Bay; Slouchy: Caron One Pound, Golden Yellow

Yardage Used: Beanie--120 y, Slouchy--140 y

Needles: 16” circular needle, or longer for Magic Loop.

Other Notions: Five to six stitch markers, with one different to mark beginning of round; tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Skill Level: Easy Simple stitch patterns and shaping.

Stitches Used: k, k2tog, CDD, ssk, yo
