Double Fun Playmat
Double knitting is a great colorwork technique that allows for the creation of motifs without having to use bobbins, as with intarsia, or carry long floats, as with stranding. It creates a two-sided fabric with the motifs and background appearing in the opposite colors on the reverse side. In a bulky yarn such as this, it makes for a comfy surface for baby to lie on, and the motifs are cheerful shapes to help teach words and sounds.
I love a seamless look all around, so I used a two-color invisible cast on, twisted edges to lock the layers, and a Kitchener graft to bind off.
The pattern is adjustable for both size and thickness. Choose one motif to make a washcloth; use a thinner yarn and four motifs for a lovey; repeat motifs or experiment with charting some of your own to make a 16-square blanket—the choice is yours!
