Beautiful cables, worked in the round, are not just for knitters! Usually, when crochet fabric is created in the round, the stitches start to twist around due to the asymmetrical nature of crochet stitches. Working post-stitch cables on a background of ESC solves this problem: ESC stitches line up vertically so the fabric doesn’t twist, and as an added bonus it is a smooth and stretchy stitch pattern that is just perfect for socks!

These socks begin with a HDC Blp ribbing worked in turned rows. The ribbing strip is slip stitched to form a tube, then stitches are worked into the rows ends to begin ankle. Ankle is worked top-down in the round, increasing to create a gusset. Stitches are skipped to create a heel opening (heel is added later). Decreases are made, instep is worked, then toe is worked in the round in a stitch pattern that adds extra cushion to the toe.

Heel is worked in the round after toe is finished, however, if desired length of sock is uncertain, heel can be worked before toe to determine fit/length of sock.

Socks are stretchy, especially in the lengthwise direction. Choose a size that measures about 1-1.5” smaller than foot circumference for best fit. Length of leg and foot are easily customizable, although this may change yarn amounts. Finished length of sock should measure about 1-1.5” shorter than foot length for best fit. Sock will stretch about 4” (10 cm) in circumference to be able to fit over your heel.
