do you canoe?
The canoe is a Canadian icon, linked with the beginnings of travel and transportation, before there were roads. Their basic design, wooden ribs covered with bark, has remained unchanged for centuries. Aboringinal canoes are built from all-natural parts and when they are retired, they are returned to nature.
During fur-trading times, canoes were often officially manned by ‘voyageurs’.
Along with being a principal mode of transport historically in nearly every part of Canada, and ranging in size from tiny to 40 feet long, they were a huge factor in the commercial development of Canada. Along with canoes came ships and movement of cargo and passengers from the old world to the new.
Waterways still play a great role in Canada, with our many coasts and Great Lakes and rivers galore.
The eyelet lines of holes along the sides of these mitts represent port holes, movement between portages, sailing across waters or along a river, come what may.
The design element carries along the thumb gussett and continues up to the top of the mitts.
Available in two sizes - long (13”), or regular (9.5”).
The sample colourway is “Baffin Island” (long version), currently available here - https://oceanwindknits.indiemade.com/product/o-canada-lim...
