A fierce-looking sweater for son or daughter with very tame vertical stripes, made especially fun with handpainted or variegated yarn.

The simple slip stitch pattern creates a dense and squishy fabric for a cozy pullover. Choose a variegated or self-striping yarn and pair it with a solid colour for a wonderful visual effect.

Sizes to fit approximate ages as follows, with the understanding that every child is different and it’s best to determine which size to knit based on measurements and not age. The ease increases with the size of the chest measurement and is very oversized in the larger sizes.

This knitting pattern includes written directions, sleeve shaping table for all sizes, front and back images, and a schematic with measurements.

Substitution Notes
Choose a solid/tonal colour and a coordinating variegated hand-painted or self-patterning yarn. The variegated colourway shouldn’t have the exact same colour as the solid colour in it, otherwise the vertical stripes won’t be clearly defined. Fingering weight and sock yarns will work really well for this project. Choose a yarn with simple care instructions.

Techniques
Increases, three needle bind off, working simple slipped stitch pattern from written instructions (no stranding!), basic drop shoulder sweater construction, worked flat, bottom up, seaming, picking up stitches.
