Diamond Divide Socks
I love knitting with self-striping sock yarn, but sometimes it doesn’t play so nicely with stitch patterns -- and let’s be honest, there’s only so many plain stockinette socks one can knit before getting bored. These socks arose from a desire to do something interesting and unusual with a skein of self-striping yarn (though they’d look just as nice in a solid, semisolid, or variegated yarn).
Knit from the cuff down, these socks have a simultaneous heel flap and gusset, both of which are worked in the round. After the heel is turned, a flap is worked under the heel to decrease the extra stitches. The ribbed diamond on the instep is then completed before finishing the foot and working a wide toe.
Because these socks can be knit using any type of needles suitable for working in the round, specific needle numbers are not given in the pattern. Rather, you will need to be aware of which stitches constitute the front of the leg and instep and which make up the back of the leg, heel, and sole.
The following stitches and skills are used in the pattern:
- knit and purl, working flat and in the round
- yarnover increases
- basic decreases (ssk, k2tog, p2tog)
- short rows (for heel flap)
The listed amount of yarn needed to complete the pattern is an estimate; your actual yarn usage will depend on the length of your foot. While most people will be able to get a pair of socks out of 100 g of sock yarn, you should make sure you have enough yarn for your project.
