Deer perk their ears and graze in a meadow around this pretty cowl. Knit with five colors, this cowl will keep your neck warm without adding heavy bulk. The design features two Fair Isle pattern blocks framing the stranded deer in the meadow pattern. While the stranded knitting design calls for up to four colors at once, the cowl itself is simple, with no shaping or complex stitches. A second version of the chart is included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use the duplicate stitch method to add extra colors after knitting is complete.

This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, including long carries, and following a color chart. Since the motifs in this pattern call for up to four colors in a row, some knitters may opt to use the duplicate stitch technique.

The gauge is 23 sts and 28 rows over 4” (10cm) in stranded Stockinette Stitch, blocked.

The Deer in the Meadow cowl is sized to fit the average adult.

For this design I used Knit Picks CotLin DK weight yarn (70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen; 123 yards/50g). You will need 2 balls of Raindrop (#25326), and 1 ball each of Swan (#24134), Sprout (#24462), Copper (#27749), and Black (#24468). You may substitute any DK weight yarn for this pattern.

You will also need a 24” (60cm) circular needle in size US 6 (4.0mm) or size to obtain gauge.

This pattern includes a full color chart, a two-color chart for optional duplicate stitch, and written instructions.
