Release Celebration: Deep Winter Sweater is part of our Deep Winter collection, and is 30% off for a limited time, along with the matching Deep Winter Coat and Hat.

Deep Winter Sweater is a richly textured, deeply cozy cable pullover designed for the coldest days of the year. Thick, plush cables meet a tailored silhouette, for a sweater that feels timeless, well-fitting, and incredibly satisfying to knit.

This is the kind of sweater people do a double take on when you tell them you knit it. Warm without feeling heavy, structured yet comfortable, and full of beautiful details on the needles, Deep Winter is made for long evenings of knitting, mugs of hot cocoa, and reaching for the same sweater again and again.

We knit our sample in Pickles Cozy, a blown yarn with a soft halo and gentle loft that lets the cables bloom beautifully. The result is a sweater that feels wintery, but still incredibly light and drapey on the body. Save 20% on Pickles Cozy through Monday, December 22 with code DEEPWINTERSWEATER

Construction Overview

Deep Winter Sweater is a seamless, top-down, set-in sleeve cable pullover designed for a tailored yet cozy fit.

The front and back shoulders are worked flat and shaped with short rows to create a clean, structured shoulder and neckline line. After the armholes, the body is joined in the round and worked straight to the hem, with the cable motifs continuing uninterrupted to the 1x1 ribbed finish.

Cables are featured on both the front and back, framed by stockinette side panels that create an easy-to-wear silhouette and flattering drape through the body.

The sleeves are worked in the round and shaped with a short-row sleeve cap for a true set-in sleeve feel, all without seams. A stunning cable detail runs down the side of the arm, and the sleeves finish with a 1x1 ribbed cuff.

Instructions include both a foldable turtleneck collar and a classic crew neckline. The sample shown features the turtleneck option.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Classic cables, modern construction: Traditional texture with seamless set-in sleeves
  • Warm but not heavy: Designed to feel plush without excess weight
  • Meditative knitting: Thick, rhythmic cables that are easy to get lost in
  • Two neckline options: Choose a cozy turtleneck or a simple crew
  • Thoughtful shaping: Bust shaping before the sleeve split for a better fit across sizes

Suggested Yarn Alternatives

If Pickles Cozy is unavailable, look for yarns that are light, lofty, and soft enough to let the cables bloom without weighing the garment down:

  • Blown or chainette-style bulky yarns (Drops Air, Sandnes Garn Børstet Alpakka, Woolfolk Luft)
  • Worsted-weight yarn held with mohair for similar loft and halo
  • Light bulky yarns that meet gauge (Cascade Cantata, Katia Concept yarns, KnitPicks Wonderfluff, or similar)

Heavier, densely spun 100% wool yarns can make the fabric feel weighty on the needles and body, so we recommend choosing something with air and bounce.

Fit Notes

To choose your size, measure your full bust and add 2–6” depending on your preferred fit. For example, if your bust measures 40”, the 44” size will give you 4” of positive ease. If you have narrower shoulders, you may prefer a size with 2–4” of ease.
