A scarf or shawl can bring an outfit together and make you feel like you’ve made an effort in even jeans and a t-shirt. A good neutral shawl like this can become the cornerstone of an outfit and is an easy way to inject handmade into any occasion.

Corner to Corner (C2C) is a blanket standard which creates a beautiful diagonal stripe. We’ve used it in this lovely shawl with a finer weight and a bigger hook to give more delicate drape and blocked aggressively to bring out the lacy beauty. Look for semi-solid or variegated yarns with similar colours in them to give you a subtle fade from one to the other.

Deep Realm forms part of the book Everyday Wearables - a collection of eight wardrobe staples with comprehensive instructions and many photo tutorials to help you make garments that fit and flatter.

Pattern is written in standard UK crochet terminology with US translations provided in the abbreviations.

Size
Length: 180cm/71in
Width: 41cm/16in
Instructions are given to adjust size.

Materials
1 100g skein Vivacious 4ply (4ply weight, 100% superwash Merino, 365m/399yds/100g) in Denim (631) (Col A)
1 100g skein Vivacious 4ply (4ply weight, 100% superwash Merino, 365m/399yds/100g) in Pebble Beach (614) (Col B)
4.5mm hook (US 7) hook

Tension
5 blocks by 5 blocks to 10cm/4in using 4.5mm hook (or size needed to obtain tension)
Note: this is the tension after aggressively blocking the shawl (see blocking notes) to bring out the lace.
You won’t get anywhere near this tension while making. Ensure the fabric you are making is loose, drapey and will stretch. Measure tension across the width of the scarf rather than the width of the row (which is on the bias) so that you are measuring from side to side of each block rather than across the diagonal of it.

Difficulty Rating
Easy

Skills Needed
Basic crochet stitches, corner to corner technique.

Construction
Worked in rows on the bias.

Book contains a photo tutorial for working corner to corner stitch.
