(The Debutante Hat was designed as a teaching tool and made its debut at Squam Art Workshops in June 2017, for students only. It was published as a downloadable pattern in April 2019.)

Debutante was inspired by a couple of mid-century hat patterns I love but was explicitly designed as an introduction to cable knitting and chart reading. So it’s a great first pattern if you’re new to either, and a quick, pleasant knit for anyone already versed in those skills. (If you’re new to cables, I strongly suggest sticking with the recommended yarn in a light color, which will net reliable results.) Because it’s meant to get you comfortable with charts, it is charted only, and there is a chart tutorial included.

MATERIALS 
• 1 skein Quince and Co. Osprey 100% American wool, 170 yd / 155 m per 100 g skein, pictured in Kumlien’s Gull (grey) and Egret (undyed) w/optional pompom
• 9 stitch markers (1 contrasting)
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

NEEDLES
• 16” circular needle in size to achieve gauge (suggested size US8 / 5 mm)
• Double-pointed needles in same size, or one size smaller if preferred
• Cable needle (or short DPN)

GAUGE
20 stitches x 26 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in Moss Stitch

SIZE AND MEASUREMENTS
• 18-19” circumference at brim (unstretched), 8” tall
