• 3.5-mm (US size 4) needles for knitting in the round (small circumference) or size needed to obtain gauge

• 100g KnitPicks Hawthorne Fingering Kettle Dye (357 yds/326 m in Blackbird) and
• 120g Canon Hand Dyes Charles Sock (474 yds/433 m in 24 Nancy Drew mini-skeins)

A Note on Yarn Choice
The sample used 24 miniskeins of equal yardage, totaling 120g, plus 100g of a neutral MC, all in fingering weight. This yielded a cowl of 830 yds/760 m yarn; 72”/183 cm in circumference; and 5½”/14 cm wide. However, you can let your imagination run wild and create a cowl of any number of colors, weight, or yardage.

This cowl is highly adaptable, in that you can use any number of miniskeins or leftover bits of yarn, and they do not have to be of equal yardage. You can even choose to use only two colors and divvy up one of them into several mini-skeins.

You can also knit the cowl in any weight yarn, though that would require modifying your needle size; the goal is to get a drapey fabric that is still tight enough so your magic knots won’t show through.

28 stitches and 37 rounds = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette in the round
