Let those stitches shine! Assigned pooling creates a fascinating fabric with your favorite multicolor yarns in this fun-to-knit scarf or shawl. This trapezoidal piece is made with simple shaping that lets the yarn to do the hard work.
Assigned pooling is a knitting technique that uses the colors in our yarns to create a pattern. Whenever your “assigned” color for pooling arrives at the needles, an interesting stitch is worked to highlight the variations of color in the yarn.
Construction Details
This wrap is made in one piece. The piece begins at one corner and then is worked on the bias to the end corner. As the basic shape of this piece is being worked, the Crosshatch Stitch is worked whenever the assigned pooling color is ready to be worked. The wrap is specifically made to begin and end with one stitch so no cast on or bind off areas have any assigned pooling color in them.
Techniques Necessary
- Slip knot/fasten off
- Knit/Purl
- Working the Crosshatch Stitch (video and photo tutorial included in the pattern)
- Increasing (YO, m1l, m1r)
- Decreasing (k2tog, skpo, sk2po)
Sizes: Scarf (Shawl)
Finished measurements (blocked): approximately 64”/163 cm long and 14 (20)”/35 (51) cm wide.
Gauge:
Before blocking: 21 sts and 30 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch using size needle to obtain gauge.
After blocking: 19 sts and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch using size needle to obtain gauge.
Needles: US 6 (4 mm) 24”/60 cm circular needle or size needed for gauge. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Yarn: 800 (1200) yards fingering weight (CYCA #1) yarn. To achieve assigned pooling, the yarn must have a repeating color with a length of about 16”/40 cm.
Sample made with Yarn Snob Yarns “A Good Fingering” (100% superwash merino wool; 437 yds /100 g) in Lilly, 2 skeins.
Other Materials: tapestry needle.
