This is a fun and easy to make crocheted cardigan. It’s worked in the lovely V- stitch, which is one of my favorite stitches since it’s so comfy to work and quick too! And that’s why I call it the CROJO CARDIGAN. It’s the ideal project to boost your crochet confidence and once finished, you can wear it and show off your talent! So get your crojo on, have a go at it and see just how easy it is.

I know a lot of you might shy away from wearables, thinking it’s too complicated. Admittedly, in comparison to a scarf, it’s a bit more complicated, but it really is just terribly easy to do. I promise! The cardigan is simple with a straight form and nonetheless it sits very nicely once you wear it.

general instructions

The cardigan is worked from the bottom up. The sleeves are worked whole in rounds. The body is worked back and forth in rows. Then you join the body and sleeves and continue working the cardigan back and forth in rows, doing decreases in the yoke and up to the neck lining.

The pattern comes as written instructions, but complimented with photos and charts, both for the V Stitch and the increases/decreases.

The V-stitch

The whole cardigan is worked in the V-stitch, (charts included in pattern). You are always working into the DC spaces in between 2 DC’s that are worked into the same space. That way they form rows of V’s, and in the next row you just work into the V in the row before, skipping the DC spaces on each side of the V’s. just bear in mind that if the space doesn’t look like a V, then you don’t work into it!

This is one of my favorite stitches and It really is such a delight to stitch, because you don’t even have to look where you are going, you can just feel the spaces with your fingers, so it works up really quickly!

Abbreviations (US terms)

ST = stitch/stitches
CH = chain stitch
SS = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
DC SP = double crochet space, the space between two DC‘s that stand side by side.
DC 2tog = decrease where you work two double crochet stitches together.

Yarn
The cardigan requires worsted or Aran weight yarn and you can use any type you like.

I used Easy Care Classic from Mayflower (100% wool, 105 m = 50 g).
I also recommend using Lettlopi from Istex (100 % wool, 100 m = 50 g), which is lovely and very light Icelandic wool.

of both types, you will need:

Main color: 9 (11) 13 (15) skeins
Pattern color: 2 skeins. (I used 3 skeins in mine, since I used 3 pattern colors, 1 skein of each color).
You can also use scraps for the pattern colors, since it doesn’t require a full skein of each.

Hook

No 5 mm.

Gauge

11 rows & 14 ST in V-stitch = 10 cm

Sizes

The cardigan comes in 4 sizes: from extra small to large, the smallest size can work for teenagers as well.

XS (S) M (L)

Total width of body:
approx. 86 (100) 110 (120) cm wide / 34 (39.5) 43.5 (47.50) inches wide

Length of body up to underarm:
approx. 36 (40) 42 (44) cm long / 14 (16) 16.5 (17.5) inches long

Length of sleeves up to underarm:
approx. 38 (42) 44 (46) cm long /15 (16.5) 17.5 (18) inches long

The way the sizes work is that they get both longer and wider with each size up. Now, in real life (and I know this from personal experience!) one does not actually get longer in the same proportion as one tends to get “wider” (wouldn’t that be nice!), so bear this in mind when choosing your size and then when working the length of the body and sleeves. You will need to follow the starting chain number and increase instructions for your ‘width size’, but for example you can work a size large cardigan but use the length from the small or medium sizes. That’s what I do, who wants to fit in a predetermined box anyways!
