Axminster is a tough wool and nylon yarn ideal for carpets and rugs due to its strength and colour range. When corcheted into a tight fabric it makes a perfect bag or vessel that is hard wearing and will hold its shape without needing a lining.
English crochet terms are used.
This is very suitable for beginners.
Throughout bag - yarn is used doubled (or even tripled) depending on the thickness of yarn and/or to blend different colours. The Axminster rug yarn may vary in thickness so it may be necessary to vary the crochet hook size until the desired fabric is obtained. Gauge isn’t essential.
This pattern is very versatile - it is easy to make a vase shape without handles, or to continue to increase stitches after the base is complete to get a bowl shape, or to make the top shorter, or to make the handles longer.
Once the technique is mastered, the crocheter can play with the basic pattern to make something truly unique.
