Cozy Canvas Neckwarmer
Welcome to your Cozy Canvas Neckwarmer Adventure!
Construction
This design is for a garter stitch shawl, working from one corner and increasing with yarn-overs to your desired depth, then decreasing until 3 stitches remain. This pattern is beginner-friendly, but fun for an experienced knitter to play and create an infinitely wearable shape.
The Cozy Canvas pattern is written as a ‘choose your own
shawl adventure’; think of it as a guideline to get you
started, with some tips along the way. You’ll notice there
isn’t the standard hard and fast gauge, needle or yarn
recommendations, or size listed. They’re entirely up to you,
the knitter, with your available materials and your
inclinations. Instead, information about the samples
pictured is provided to give you some ideas and guidance.
Materials
Yarn: Any! Samples shown feature handspun yarn
Marceline’s sample (Shape 2): 2ply DK / light worsted (polworth / silk & merino / hemp)
Jess’s striped, asymmetrical sample: 2ply sport / DK; Blackberry Heritage Fibers Romney / Silk (solid gray) and handdyed Romney (multi-color); 6 ounces (168 g) / 350 yds total
Needles and Notions
Use the best needle for your weight of yarn to create the fabric you desire. A link for standard needle sizes and their associated yarn weights can be found in the resources section. A long circular needle of approximately 24 in (60 cm) or longer is recommended to hold the width of the shawl. Samples were knit using US 6 / 4mm (Marceline) and US 5 / 3.5mm (Jess)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Progress keeper to mark RS of work (optional)
Digital scale to weigh yarn (optional)
Finished Size
The finished size should be something that comfortably wraps around your neck, or can be fastened with a shawl pin or cuff. You can make something like a bandana, more cowl shaped, or something longer and narrower, more scarf-like.
Marceline’s (Shape 2): 78 in (195 cm) wide, 16 in (40 cm) deep
Jess’s (asymmetrical): 82 in (205 cm) wide, 18.5 in (46 cm) deep
