Contemporary Hap
This design originally appeared in Cast On, the educational journal of The Knitting Guild Association, in Fall 2018.
Across Scotland and northern England the word hap has been used to mean a wrap or cover. More specifically, it refers to a square knitted shawl. The traditional method for knitting this type of shawl starts with the edging and then stitches are picked up to knit the body. This contemporary design works from the center out, with the edging a continuation of the shawl, rather than a separate piece. Twelve colors of Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed - a light fingering-weight yarn - are used.
