Come by the Hills is a traditional tune (air) “Buachaill On Eirne” paired with lyrics by Gordon Smith:
“Stand where the peaks meet the sky and the loughs meet the sea
Where the rivers run clear and the bracken is gold in the sun
And the cares of tomorrow can wait till this day is done”

A stunning, mirrored Bavarian cable panel with a touch of lace is worked down the centre of this poncho. Tiny cable columns along each side echo the centre panel design while the intermediate area is worked in Stockinette stitch. Hemlines / cuff areas (depending on how the poncho is worn – see Styling Ideas below) are finished with a seeded rib border and an Icelandic Bind Off (link to a video in the Helpful Links section and photo tutorial in Techniques section).

This poncho is worked flat. Beginning with a provisional cast on, it is worked as one piece up to the neck opening. The work is then split in two, with each side worked separately, at the same time, using two skeins of yarn, until the neck opening is finished (don’t worry – it’s really easy!). A few additional stitches are added to frame the neck opening. Once the neck opening is complete, the work is joined again and worked as one piece; the hemline finishes with a seeded rib border. The provisional cast on stitches are then picked up and the opposite hemline is finished to match the first.

Right and left are referenced as the garment is worn.

Stitch pattern is charted with written directions for the chart provided. The pattern also includes enlarged versions of the charts.

Styling Ideas
This very versatile cover-up can be worn with the cable panel vertically, creating a V-neck look, with the cable panel worn horizontally creating a boat neck style or with the cable panel on the diagonal creating an asymmetrical neckline.

For a more formed silhouette, try pairing it with a belt – narrow or wide -- that catches the front of the poncho but leaves the back free or use a fashion fit elastic clip to snug the front panel around your body.

The side edges, parallel to the cable panel, could also be clipped (or sewn) together for approximately 14” / 35cm from the hems toward the centre to create generous sleeves (directions not included). So many options!

22 sts x 28 rows = 4” / 10cm in Stockinette stitch, blocked.

32-row Chart A/B cable pattern = 5” / 12.5cm, blocked.
