Colortunes is a generous and luxurious scarf made with sequence knitting and marls. There are three colors in a thicker yarn that determine the gauge and palette, and two colors in a carrier yarn that modulates or tunes the colors. The stripes are laid out in varying orders so the colors are evenly distributed, and only one strand changes at a time which makes the knitting pleasant and visually connects one stripe to the next—in the language of Making Marls, this is a “swap one strand” marl sequence.

In the sample shown, the main colors are bright orange, yellow, and pink, and the carrier yarn is two shades of gray. The stripes are worked in a nuanced, reversible, broken garter pattern. To make your own, choose the three main colors from any wedge of a colorwheel, and then choose two tonal carrier yarns.

The yarns in the sample are On Stage and Silk Divine from Nature’s Luxury. On Stage is their exclusive blend of merino, mulberry silk, and baby camel. It has excellent stitch definition, a soft hand, and a luster from the silk. Silk Divine is a 60/40 mohair/silk and also has a wonderful luster.
