Mary Anning is one of my favorite paleontologists. Not only did she play a major role in the discovery and classification of several iconic marine reptiles, she overcame poverty and adversity as a woman in the early 1800s to make important contributions to the field of paleontology (even though the vast majority of her work was not credited to her at the time). Set up as a vintage scientific illustration print, the Coastal Relics Shawl / Scarf celebrates her life and work with depictions of the cliffs of Lyme Regis, ammonites, ichthyosaurs, belemnites, a plesiosaurus, and more!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Needles
US 4 (3.5 mm) needles with cord long enough to hold width of shawl

Yarn & Yardage
Two or more colors in fingering weight yarn

Color A: 220 yd / 201 m (single-width); 306 yd / 280 m (double-width)
Color B: 790 yd / 722 m (single-width); 1,580 yd / 1,444 m (double-width)

Creating a fade or using an advent for this pattern is a blast! Divide Color B by the number of colors you want to use to get each individual color’s length that you’ll need.

This design was originally created in collaboration with Yarnaceous Fibers for the Fossils by the Sea 2024 yarn advent. If you’re looking to stay on-theme for this pattern, I recommend checking out her amazing Salta Fingering yarn in any color combination that speaks to you!
