Cloister Socks
Clois-tered: Noun kloi-sterd
Secluded from the world; sheltered: a cloistered life
Having a cloister or cloisters
Imagine yourself a princess, choosing a simpler life. You’ve retired to the local abbey with it’s colonnade around the garden. You want something warm on your feet as you walk the stone halls. Your new life leaves frills behind, perhaps a sock with a simple 2x2 rib. It will allow you to chat with the other ladies or contemplate as you work. Though you’ve left the ostentation of lace behind, but still want something a little feminine. The cuff can have a hem that forms a picot edging and acts as a casing for a feminine ribbon. And your feet, unaccustomed to rough texture will want the soles to have the purl bumps on the outside, with the smooth stockinette against your skin. In honor of your new home there should be a shaped arch, an inverted V at the back of the heel, and calf shaping to echo the architecture around you. You’ll create these Cloister Socks.
This pattern contains extensive notes and suggestions for customizing the fit for your foot and leg.
