This is a classic argyle sock pattern, for women’s size 9 1/2 or men’s size 11 1/2 (foot length adjustable as needed), in mid-calf and knee lengths. It’s worked top down, flat, until the heel flap, then connected in the round for the foot. The toe is gradually shaped by decreases then grafted together. The leg is then seamed. The cross-lines are charted to be knit as one goes along, but those stitches may also be knit in the background diamond colors, then the proper color added later as duplicate stitch.

The women’s pattern for both knee and mid-calf lengths call for two 200-yd balls of main color, and one 200-yd ball each of two contrast diamond colors and two contrast cross-line colors. The men’s pattern calls for one fewer ball, because there is only one one color used for the cross-lines. The cross-line colors presumably use far less yarn than the 200-yard / 40 gram ball called for of each.

Gauge is 8 sts/inch in stockinette with larger needles, and 9 sts/inch in stockinette with smaller needles.

The mid-calf version uses the smaller needles only. The knee high version uses the smaller needles for most of the sock, switching to the larger ones for part of the upper body of the sock.

Suggested colors for men:
Main Color is Chocolate, Diamonds colors are Camel and Yellow, Cross-line color is Ecru.

Suggested colors for women:
Main Color is Navy, Diamonds colors are Cranberry and Ecru, Cross-lines colors are Camel and Yellow.

These colors are pictured on the front cover of the leaflet.

Brunswick Fairhaven, Picnic, and Windspun Fingering yarns are named as interchangeable substitutes for Brunswick Nylamb Sock and Sweater Yarn.
