Finished Sizes 12¼ (16½)“/31 (42) cm circumference, unstretched, to fit Baby/Toddler (Small to Medium Adult). Hat height 6¾ (8½)”/17 (21.5) cm. Shown in Size 16½“/42 cm.

Yarn #4 Medium (worsted) weight, 140 (240) yd/130 (220) m. Shown in Woolfolk Får (100% merino; 142 yd/130 m per 1¾ oz/50 g), #13, 1 (2) skeins.
Note: Ball band gauge of Woolfolk Får is 17.5-16 sts and 27-24 rows using Size 6-8/4-5 mm needles (significantly different from St st gauge shown below).

Needles Size 7 (4.5 mm): 16” to 20” circular and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge 35 sts and 32 rows = 4” in cable and rib patt, unstretched; 20 sts and 30 rows = 4” in St st, blocked (St st gauge given to aid yarn substitution).
Note: St st gauge and needle size indicate that yarn is borderline DK/worsted weight; some heavier #3 Light (DK) weight yarns may work for this pattern. Measure St st gauge on blocked swatch.

This hat is worked in the round. Crown decreases include an unusual technique that is similar to the initial step of a three-needle bind-off (holding two needles parallel and knitting the first stitch on each needle together).
