I love the reindeers dancing around the hat – full of festive cheer while keeping you cosy on winter walks. Once I’d finished the hat, I had enough yarn left to knit the mittens too. It’s a perfect little set for trying out Fair Isle knitting – fun to make and even better to wear.

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, slip stitch technique sometimes called mosaic colour work, fairisle, cast off. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
One 100g hank in WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK – Dyed in shade A (Berry 1036).
100% Bluefaced Leicester Wool, 225m/246yds per 100g
One 100g hank each of Bluefaced Leicester DK in shade B (Light brown 002) and shade C (Forest 1039).
The mittens use the leftover yarn from the hat.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
3.75mm and 4mm.

GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm square over stocking stitch using 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
To fit average adult head and hands.
