There is something about a little red car with a Christmas tree strapped to the roof that stops people in their tracks. This chart puts that image on the front of a baby jumper, and it makes a very pleasing reason to cast one on rather sooner than planned.

With several colour changes across the car and tree, having the instructions on paper rather than your phone makes the whole thing considerably less stressful.

A quick word about knitting charts. You can find charts online for free, and many of them are drawn on square grids. The problem is that knit stitches are not square, they are rectangular, wider than they are tall. A chart drawn on squares will knit up distorted, wider and shorter than it should be. Every motif in this library is drawn to the correct stitch ratio, so what you see on the chart is what you get on the jumper.

And if charts are not your thing, every motif also comes with full written row-by-row instructions, colour by colour, stitch by stitch. Work from whichever you prefer.

The chart works just as well on a knitted cushion cover as it does on a jumper front. A simple stocking stitch cushion with the car centred on the front makes a lovely piece of Christmas home decor that is not going to be grown out of by February.

Chart size: 34 stitches wide by 31 rows tall

Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK (295m/100g, 100% Acrylic)

Yarn A, Silver (1203): 1 ball for sizes 0-6m and 6-12m, 2 balls for sizes 12-18m to 18-24m, 3 balls for sizes 2-3y and 4-5y

Yarn B, Claret (1123): 1 ball for all sizes

Motif colours: small amounts only, no more than 10g of any single shade

Motif colours used: Bottle (1009), Leaf (2176), Walnut (1054), Charcoal (1128), Black (1002)

Needles: 3.25mm and 4mm straight needles. 3.25mm circular needles useful for the neckband but straight needles will work.

Also needed: Darning needle, stitch markers, stitch holder

Skill level: Intermediate

Gauge: 22 sts x 30 rows = 10cm x 10cm using 4mm needles and stocking stitch

Techniques: Intarsia colourwork. Smaller details can be added in duplicate stitch if preferred.
