This shawl was inspired by a color - specifically, the vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds of the Limited Edition Madelinetosh color, Mexican Grilled Street Corn - and by the shape of the Great Pyramid of Cholula in Mexico. As soon as I glimpsed this spicy, bright yarn, I couldn’t get the image of the stair-step shape of the pyramid out of my mind - so I designed a shawl to capture it!

Unfortunately, this Limited Edition Color is now sold out in the Tosh Merino Light base and we can’t get more. Some great substitutes for a bright orange, yellow, or red in TML would be Citrus, Robin Red Breast, Daffodil, Nutmeg, Ember, or Terra. The Mexican Grilled Street Corn color is available in the Twist Light base, which has the same yardage but is plied instead of single-ply. I haven’t test knit the pattern in this yarn; you may have to change needle size to get gauge if you try it.

All of the increases in this shawl are contained on the top edge and in the zig-zag pattern along it; if you don’t care for the interlocking diamond design in the middle, you can omit it without worrying about your stitch count. The edging is knitted right onto the body of the shawl, meaning that you’ll have only 2 ends to weave at the end - yay!

You can also increase the size of the shawl by adding more rows of garter stitch, but be aware that you might need extra yarn - I had about 12 grams, or 50 yards, leftover, with the long rows at the end taking 1-2 grams each (according to my kitchen scale). Also, if changing the size, you’ll need to make sure you have an appropriate stitch count for the edging (see pattern for details). You can add extra visual interest by knitting the edging in a contrasting color!
