Chirrup is knitted in the round, bottom up, and on the bias.

Soothing garter stitch makes for an allover plush and comforting cowl that can be varied in many ways and worn in even more. The finished cowl looks more intricate than the making of it would lead you to believe.

My own gaggle of chirrups are all comfortably snug with a circumference of 50–60 cm (19.5–23.5”).

The pattern sizes were determined by my wish to limit yarn usage to 150g for sport and 200g for worsted – if you have more yarn you can knit wider or taller or both.

To change the circumference, consider that the bias or actual circumference is smaller than the knitted round.

Pattern instructions for two different weights and gauges:

  • Worsted weight :: 18 sts x 36 rows)
  • Sportweight :: 20 sts x 38 rows

There are suggested stitch counts for other gauges as well.

For the bottom of your cowl: choose a simple longtail or a favourite stretchy cast on. Alternatively, wind on provisional stitches and right away bind off the bottom edge with an i-cord bind off.

For the top: finish with simple stretchy bind off or an i-cord bind off as you please.
(There are tutorial photos for the i-cord cast in and bind off.)

Note: depending on your stitch/row gauge ratio, for less pointy points, you may want to make the increases and decreases on every 3rd or 4th round instead of the pattern every other round. I found this to be true for some sportweight and thinner yarns.

Chirrup is eminently suitable for stash busting.
