These are muffatees (a Victorian name for hand warmers). Mine are both made exactly the same; there is no chirality (which means “handedness”) and the spirals of the cables are always a mirror-image match no matter which hand you put them on. For the thumb there is both a gore and a gusset for a comfortable fit.

I made mine with a Merino/Possum/Silk yarn that is a 6-ply weight but can knit as an 8-ply because of the loft. I knit it much more firmly than that. The yarn I used has a halo for snuggly warmth that slightly obscures the stitch pattern. I wanted an interesting knit! If you want all your twist stitches and cables to show better I recommend using a smooth yarn.

While I have made just one size it is stretchy and easy to adjust by using different yarns worked at different tensions. A 4-ply sock yarn made a smaller muffatee that could still stretch to fit me comfortably. It is very easy to adjust the length of the wrist/arm, thumb or hand sections to suit the recipient if needed.

However, if you want to make it very much wider or narrower you’ll need to use your own expertise and the charts to figure out where you can put in or remove repeats or stitches (for example, by placing 3 reverse-stocking stitches between cable columns instead of 2).
