Child's Inis Beag Hat
This quintessential Aran hat is perfect for keeping those heads toasty warm in the winter! This pattern is worked in the round and features a twisted knit rib, cables, diamond pattern, and double seed stitch. Decreases at the crown are worked so that the cable patterns continue to the top. The hat is topped with an optional pompom.
This pattern is sized for an average child’s head (18-21” circumference). The actual circumference of the hat is 17” and the length from top to bottom is 8”. For an adult size, you could work the same pattern using a bulky weight yarn. For a toddler size, try using a sport weight yarn.
The gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch.
This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to make basic cables as well as standard decrease stitches.
For the blue version, I used Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash, a worsted weight wool (100% superwash wool, 110 yds per ball). You will need 2 balls of Cadet (#26339). For the natural version, I used Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool, an Aran/worsted weight wool (100% wool, 465 yds per skein). You will need 1 skein of the Natural (#3249893). You may substitute any worsted weight yarn for this pattern. You will also need 16” circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 7 or whatever size necessary to get the gauge.
This pattern includes full written instructions as well as a full chart, so that you may choose according to your preference.
