Who doesn’t love a festive holiday hat? When I saw these vibrant colors, the first image that came to mind was that of the elves from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer or even Will Ferrell in Elf. That is how this pattern came to be. I wanted to make a sturdy, pointy-topped hat that paid homage to those classic elves from the movies.

The pattern is sized for a child, fitting like a traditional winter cap. It is not fitted tightly. Instead, the rolled-up brim fits snugly while the rest of the hat is comfortably roomy.

The yarn I used is bulky-weight (#5), which is stiff enough to keep the shape of the point at the top when using the correct size needles. The yarn pictured is Lion Brand Wool-Ease Tonal in the Lime and Vermillion colorways, though any bulky-weight yarn could be substituted. The reason I like Tonal for this pattern is because it has some wool, making it warm and toasty, but it is mainly acrylic. The colors are very vibrant and fun, and they just seem to say “holiday cheer.”

The hat is worked on circular needles in the round. I would classify it as an easy/intermediate pattern. It is not difficult if you are comfortable knitting in the round, but that skill is necessary to complete this pattern.
