Centrino Quadrato, Fig. 33
Needle size given as 1/0 which would be somewhat finer than 1.25 mm (=2/0)
Knitted square lace doily of four square motifs, each appearing as four leaf shapes touching at their tips, the entire conjoined piece surrounded by an edging of stockinette triangles with diamonds and faggotting between them, and finished with a crocheted chain.
The design goal of this doily seems to have been to find the most complex possible way to make a pattern formed from four joined square motifs. Each of the four motifs is worked from the center out following Chart A (23 rounds), which ends just past the widest part of each leaf shape. All stitches are held as live stitches to await working of the corners of the motifs. The stiches for the four corners that meet at the center of the doily are put on needles and worked inward following Chart B (23 rounds). Then the stitches for each of the remaining motif corners are put on needles, either singly as at the corners of the cloth, or from two adjacent motifs where they meet at the sides, and worked back and forth following Chart B. The four square motifs at this point are joined. Stitches are picked up all the way around to knit the edging following Chart C (17 rounds).
There is a diagram with the charts that attempts to elucidate the construction. The heavy lines are the division between Chart A and Chart B. The dashed line is where the stitches are picked up for Chart C. If you draw lines between the tick marks at the midpoints of the four sides, these will show the boundaries of the four square motifs.
