About this pattern:
Carnie was written and made as my celebration of another geeky obsession of mine: Fibonacci sequence numbers. The Fibonacci sequence is a list of numbers starting with 0 and 1 where every subsequent number is the sum of the two previous numbers in the sequence. So, this sequence starts with 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc. Groovy, you say, but so? Well, it turns out that these numbers and the ratios between each of them occur in nature everywhere (the number of pinecone scales in each subsequent whorl, or the number of sunflower seeds in each whorl on a sunflower.) The ratio describes the arc and spiral of a nautilus shell. We seem to be hardwired to appreciate them because of this, and so we seem to also be naturally interested in anything that uses numbers in the sequence. We find stripes done with these numbers harmonious, even when done randomly and out of order. Cool!
Carnie is a simple striped slouchy beanie that uses a single color for the ribbed bottom and two other colors alternating in stripes that are irregular and seemingly random, yet are still pleasing to the eye.
Skills required:
You must be able to: knit in the round on both double pointed needles and circular needles. While the stripes are irregular, the actual knitting is simple.
Materials:
Yarn: Yarn Carnival Carnie (Worsted Weight, 100% Superwash Merino, 218 yds/100g) in 3 colors. The yarns ideally should be semi-solids, but any of them could have small flecks of a color as well.
You will need 109 yds of each of 3 colors.

Notions: 1 stitch marker; tapestry needle for weaving in.
