One of my favorite aspects of knitting is the possibility of it all. I believe that every pattern is a recipe, or a set of recommendations, but not a set of hard and fast rules. Patterns are most fun for me when I imagine possibilities and see what happens. Tabletop role playing games are similar; there are books (and books and books) of tables and rules, but the best rule is the Rule of Cool, allowing party members to imagine the possibilities and see what happens.

Easy enough to knit during a TTRPG session, the Campaign Party Hat is a Rule of Cool kind of a pattern. There are steps, recommendations, and a data table, but the whole pattern is designed to be open to the creator’s interpretation. Stripe as your colors and inspiration guide you. Make a short nightcap or a comically long hat that drags on the floor. Roll a die to choose color order or stripe width. Imagine the possibilities and see what happens. Make a hat for everyone in your campaign party.

Supplies
150-500 yards of sport weight yarn in 1 or more colors. Shown in Ewe So Sporty - assorted colors. Imp hat shown in Sunrise Fiber Sport.

US4/3.5 mm 16in/40cm & DPNs (or a length appropriate for magic loop)
4 stitch markers (one for BOR)

Pompom or tassel making form (optional)

Sizes & Approximate Circumference:
Imp/Baby - 13.25 in/33.75 cm
Goblin/Child - 15.25 in/38.75 cm
Halfling/Small - 16.75 in/42.5 cm
Elf/Medium - 18.75 in/47.5 cm
Goliath/Large - 20 in/50.75 cm

Choosing a Size:
The length of the hat and the pom or tassel adds weight that pulls the hat backwards. Knit a size with 2 or more inches of negative ease.
