From Knit Picks: “This design was inspired by a trip to New Orleans. The call of the Mississippi River is heard from the very northern part of the United States, to where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Steamboats, once a common sight on the mighty river, are less common today but still present. You can ride one of two paddle wheel steamboats in New Orleans. In the hey day of steamboat travel, townsfolk were called to the river when the steamboats were put into dock by the music of the calliope, which were played on the boats. In New Orleans, they pronounce it ‘Cal-e-ope.’

The design features a dainty edging in a Channel Island cast on, a traditional cast on used in Ganseys in the British Isles. It features a ribbed lace pattern that forms V’s reminiscent of the waves wrought from the wake of a boat. This feminine design echoes the siren song of the river. The square neckline balances the V’s formed by the stitch pattern and garter stitch bands provide a simple foil to the business of the stitch pattern.“

The Calliope Shell pattern was discontinued in 2006.
