Cable and Shell Strip II
The original pattern from ca. 1902 Butterick’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, p.10 was a 21-stitch, 6-row repeat. I added stitches for one extra cable + 2 selvage stitches and changed one row. The top and bottom edges will scallop unless at least 12 border rows are worked. You can work a narrow border if you prefer the scalloped look. The single-repeat swatch is 4” wide at gauge and has a 12-row garter stitch border at the top and bottom.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, 4-stitch cable and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
44 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 33-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
