In-Depth Yarn Answers
The yarns used in the first photo are Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted for the tall one and the button bowl, and Nashua Creative Focus Worsted for the purple bowl with turquoise beads.
All but the tall one (in photos #1 & #2) had the same number of stitches on the same size needles, and the same person knit them. All were run through my washer hot wash cold rinse, two times…
When I made a bowl in Noro Kureyon, it took 3 trips through the wash and is still somewhat fluffy and softer than the rest (mine is the back bowl in the final photo). The size differences between bowls made of different yarns were vast, but all are useable and have good proportions.
Construction: Begun with stockinette rectangle worked flat briefly; completed in the round using a set of 5 double-pointed needles (4 holding, 1 working).
Sizes: A “Smaller/Taller” bowl in Lamb’s Pride measures 4˝ dia. x 4˝ high. “Larger/Lower” bowls range 4–5.5˝ dia. x 2.25–3.25˝high. Yarn chosen makes a big difference in size.
Gauge: Stitch counts given for Appx. 16 st / 4 inches (gauge not crucial), stockinette in the round.
Needles: 1 set (of five) size 10.5 US / 6.5 mm double-pointed needles (DPNs), 7˝ long.
Yarn Quantities: Small amounts of all-animal-fiber feltable aran-weight, heavy worsted weight or doubled sport weight yarns. Superwash yarns & those with significant synthetic or plant-fiber content will not felt.
Yarn Possibilities: Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted, Malabrigo Merino worsted-weight, Nashua Creative Focus Worsted (made a thinner fabric/smaller bowl), any classic worsted wt. Try two strands of Brown Sheep Naturespun Sport held together as one, DiVe’ Autunno, GGH Magica, Tahki Shannon, Tahki Donegal Tweed, Araucania Aysen, Berroco Peruvia, Cascade Pastaza, Classic Elite Montera, Filatura Di Crosa 127 Print.
Note: All of the recommended yarns will felt, but they will likely not shrink at the same rate. For best results, do not combine different yarns. Noro Kureyon makes fluffy, soft felt even with more agitation than other yarns.
