Butterfly Wings is a hybrid shape; not quite half hexagon, not quite partial square, not quite semi-circular. I have found that I like the way this shape fits over my shoulders, and gives it a bit of flexibility with how to wear: draped from the front, back, slightly askew, etc.

The shawl is easy to knit, with the majority of the shawl being just knits and purls. The colorwork is easily performed, only having to hold one strand of color at a time! :o)

This shawl was originally designed in collaboration with The Nifty Knitter to celebrate their 6 month anniversary.

Final Dimensions:
From middle to bottom of shawl height: 17.5” 44.5 cm
From wingtip to wingtip of shawl width: 3.5” 110.5 cm

Gauge: 20 sts x 34 rows = 4” x 4” 10 cm x 10 cm in stockinette st, blocked
A quick gauge in st st, unblocked: 24 sts = 4”

Materials:
Yarn:
Seattle Sky Dyeworks Mismated (70% superwash merino, 30% silk; 378 yds/115 g)
MC: 1 skein in colorway Sunset or 330 yds of heavy fingering weight yarn
CC: 1 skein in colorway Fightin’ Bears or 375 yds of heavy fingering weight yarn
I used very nearly all of the CC yarn. If your gauge varies wildly, I’d suggest either changing needle size or else cutting out some of the Stockinette Section rows.

An easier to find alternate yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight.

Needles:
US 5 3.75 mm - at least 40” circular needle

Notions: 6 stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking pins, blocking wires (optional)

ERRATA:
Original handout from Nifty Knitter: Double Seed Stitch Section, part 2: Repeat Double Seed Stitch Section, part 1 verbatim through Row 5. Then continue to Finishing directions.
