I’ve used an aran yarn with a 4.5mm hook. Whilst tension is not critical, if you know you have a loose tension, it might be worth going down a hook size.

This is a great introduction for those wishing to try a graphgan. Only a handful of colours are needed and it isn’t so big that you’ll get in a tangle!
