Brimmed Monmouth Style Hat
This hat is a very basic late medieval style hat whose shaping is mainly achieved by felting and blocking over a form. It doesn’t have to be a fancy form. The hats pictured were produced using a tall flower pot and a mini waste container for a desk.
The technique does require that you use a yarn that will felt. 100% non-superwash wool is the preferred type of yarn. The hat can be worked on multiple double pointed needles for authenticity, but can just as easily be done using the two-circular or Magic Loop methods. If you use circular needles, you will need an additional needle for the three-needle bind off at the brim edge.
This hat is worked crown down to the brim, and is a fairly simple knit that works up very quickly. Add an ostrich feather and a fancy pin, a hatband, or pin up the sides for a jaunty look. Plain or fancy, it is a fun hat to make.
