I designed this cowl to be a simple rustic knit, worked sideways for ease in sizing. Buttons allow the cowl to be removed without taking your hat off!

One size, length adjustable to knitter’s preference.

Choose two colours that contrast. The cowl works best when the main colour yarn has some body - choose a plied yarn that isn’t super soft; the main colour yarn helps with the structure of the cowl. The contrasting colour yarn can be any yarn of similar weight to the main colour - choosing something soft can make up for the rustic character of the main yarn.

Cowl uses less than 80 m (88yds) of each yarn - it is easy to make another cowl from two skeins of the recommended yarns or reverse the colours for a similar, yet different, cowl.
The piece is worked flat, in garter stitch and garter mosaic colourwork (no purling!). The end is finished with an I-cord cast off with integrated buttonholes - this technique is explained in the pattern.

Pattern is written out except for the mosaic chart. The chart is presented in dark grey and white with a thick black box to indicate the stitch repeat. All abbreviations are defined in the pattern.
