Brain Frieze
Thread for the pattern - click here
ADDITIONAL INFO:
For swatching (4 rows) - don’t use stockinette - you can swatch as described in the pattern for gauge, but to an even better idea of how the yarns will work, use this method:
Row 1: k1, sl1 wyif
Rows 2 and 4: purl
Row 3: sl1 wyif, k1 (or work row 3 from the pattern)
Comment from one tester:
Love the textured look of this pattern!! It looks like a complicated fair isle pattern but is so easy & fun to work :)
I love this stitch because I find it has as just enough for the brain to do to stop things from getting boring, but each row is simple to work. It’s basically a 10-row repeat (and 4 of those are just knitting), but the colours change every 10 rows, which I found just kept me knitting…. one after another.
The stitch is usually known as Florentine Frieze and can be found in several of Barbara Walker’s books and other reference works. For the pattern I adapted it for knitting in the round and made a chart.
Each round is worked with only one yarn - the effects are created by slipping stitches in the other colour.
The pattern includes instructions for:
- a double loop with reverse stockinette edging (approx. 200m/220yds of each yarn) or
- a single loop with several edge options (seed stitch, reverse stockinette, garter stitch or no-sew picot) (approx. 150m/165yds of each yarn)
so that you make lots of different versions.
How many will you make ?
Perfect as a gift/present because it looks fancy, but is actually quick and easy to knit (we won’t tell if you don’t …. )
