This pattern contains two hats inspired by very different mountain landscapes: the first one was the result of the rewarding invite to contribute to the first issue of the italian magazine “Wool it,” dedicated to the Mocheni Valley, an “enchanted valley” with paths winding through a soft landscape of pastures and mountain meadows, that also produces a yarn made from a native breed at risk of extinction. Bollait (“people of the wool” in the native dialect) is the name of this light and airy yarn with a chain-like structure that also gave its name to the initial pattern.
The second version, more craggy and sharp, is inspired by a mountain complex that indelibly marked the summer vacations of my youth: the legendary Marmolada, a Unesco World Heritage Site, dramatic and mighty, one of the most beautiful walls in the Dolomites, with steep mountain ridges and a marked and irregular outline that two strands of Nutiden yarn worked together have perfectly helped to translate.

In both cases the chosen yarns were well suited to being worked at a tighter tension than normally used, producing a texture similar to boiled wool, with a resulting fabric that is both dense and light at the same time, perfect for the purpose of the pattern.
The construction is bottom-up starting with a folded brim, with different treatments for the two versions. The body of both hats is composed of stocking stitch sections, shaped with conventional increases and decreases and separated by raised ribs - achieved with modified versions of I-cord and knitted in “Mocheni” in intarsia style with a contrasting yarn - that outline the individual wedges and at the same time give structure and overall shape to the hats.
The instructions include both extended explanations and a concise, easy-to-follow charted version.
As always, I encourage a free individual experimentation, including tapping into both versions to create your own personal hat.

Questo modello contiene due cappelli ispirati da paesaggi montani molto diversi tra loro: il primo è stato il frutto del cortese invito a contribuire al primo numero della rivista italiana “Wool it”, dedicata alla valle dei Mocheni, “valle incantata” con sentieri che si snodano in un paesaggio morbido tra pascoli e prati di montagna, e che produce anche un filato ottenuto da una razza autoctona a rischio di estinzione. Bollait (“gente della lana” nel dialetto autoctono) è il nome del filato leggero e arioso con struttura a catenella che ha anche dato il nome al modello iniziale.
La seconda versione, più scoscesa e aguzza, si ispira a un complesso montuoso che ha segnato indelebilmente le vacanze estive della mia giovinezza: la mitica Marmolada, patrimonio Unesco, drammatica e possente, una delle pareti più belle delle Dolomiti, con ripide creste montuose e una sagoma marcata ed irregolare che due capi di filato Nutiden lavorati insieme hanno contribuito perfettamente a tradurre.

In entrambi i casi i filati scelti si sono prestati ad essere lavorati con una tensione più fitta di quella normalmente usata, ottenendo una consistenza simile alla lana cotta, con un risultato denso e leggero allo stesso tempo, perfetto per lo scopo.
La costruzione inizia dal basso con un bordo doppio, con un trattamento diverso per le due versioni. Il corpo di entrambi i cappelli è costituito da sezioni a maglia rasata, sagomate con aumenti e diminuzioni convenzionali, separate da nervature verticali - ottenute con versioni modificate di I-cord e realizzate con un filato a contrasto in “Mocheni” - che delimitano i singoli spicchi e allo stesso tempo danno struttura e forma complessiva ai cappelli.
Le istruzioni comprendono sia spiegazioni estese che una versione grafica sintetica e di facile consultazione.
Come sempre incoraggio una libera sperimentazione individuale, anche attingendo a entrambi i modelli per realizzare la propria personale versione del cappello.

NOTA: questa nuova versione del pattern contiene anche correzioni minori al modello contenuto nella rivista (attualmente in pausa di attività); chi ha riscattato la rivista in digitale dovrebbe ricevere un aggiornamento automatico con il modello originale corretto e la versione aggiuntiva: se questo non dovesse avvenire contattatemi in PM.
