New Orleans is the Birthplace of Jazz. In the late 19th century, while the rest of America was stomping their feet to military marches, New Orleans was dancing to VooDoo rhythms. New Orleans was the only place in the New World where slaves were allowed to own drums. It made people feel free. It made people feel alive! It made people get up and dance. And they danced to the birth of American music. And nobody played it like they played it in New Orleans.

Many early jazz musicians credited Buddy Bolden and the members of his band with being the originators of what came to be known as “jazz”, though the term was not in common musical use until after the era of Bolden’s prominence. One of his most famous numbers is a song called “Funky Butt”, which represents one of the earliest references to the concept of “funk” in popular music. Instead of imitating other musicians, Bolden played music he heard “by ear” and adapted it to his horn.
