Welcome to Bohemian Rhapsody, a blanket crochet pattern inspired by the greatest and perhaps most iconic song made by the rock band Queen. Using this theme has been on my to-do list for a long time. As a Queen and Freddie Mercury fan, I have had the wish for a long time, but how can I turn such a song full of lyrics into a crochet piece? Well, that started by studying the lyrics word by word and the meaning behind it. In this way, the blanket was made part by part, and the result is shown here. This pattern has become a large one, and crocheting this piece also takes you on a journey to discover the true meaning of the lyrics from Bohemian Rhapsody. I’ll explain them and tell you how I translated them into stitches, and it will give you hours of crochet fun.

Although this pattern will be available as a digital purchase, it has also been released in the first edition of the Guy with the Hook’s magazine. A new concept by the Guy with the Hook. The magazine holds the same pattern and background story - it is only so colorful and illustrated and has extra articles, fun facts, and photos of the good old days when Queen was among us. The magazine is sold in my Etsy shop as a physical copy.

Some general information about the pattern:

Yarn Requirements: For this pattern, I used Scheepjes Catona, which is a
mercerized type of 100% cotton that comes in balls of 10, 25, or 50 grams. A ball of 50 grams has a length of 125 meters. I did this as you will need many colors in smaller amounts for this design. I used the following colorways and quantities:

Color A: colorway 110 Jet Black (350 grams needed – 875 meters needed)
Color B: colorway 105 Bridal White (135 grams needed – 338 meters needed)
Color C: colorway 522 Primrose (20 grams needed – 50 meters needed)
Color D: colorway 208 Yellow Gold (45 grams needed – 113 meters needed)
Color E: colorway 249 Saffron (15 grams needed – 38 meters needed)
Color F: colorway 411 Sweet Orange (10 grams needed – 25 meters needed)
Color G: colorway 281 Tangerine (10 grams needed – 25 meters needed)
Color H: colorway 189 Royal orange (10 grams needed – 25 meters needed)
Color I: colorway 388 Rust (15 grams needed – 38 meters needed)
Color J: colorway 115 Hot Red (25 grams needed – 63 meters needed)
Color K: colorway 390 Poppy Rose (28 grams needed – 70 meters needed)
Color L: colorway 192 Scarlet (15 grams needed – 38 meters needed)
Color M: colorway 394 Shadow Purple (35 grams needed – 88 meters needed)
Color N: colorway 240 Amethyst (25 grams needed – 63 meters needed)
Color O: colorway 520 Lavender (35 grams needed – 88 meters needed)
Color P: colorway 173 Bluebell (25 grams needed – 63 meters needed)
Color Q: colorway 247 Bluebird (25 grams needed – 63 meters needed)
Color R: colorway 261 Capri Blue (25 grams needed – 63 meters needed)
Color S: colorway 527 Midnight (65 grams needed – 163 meters needed)
Color T: colorway 525 Fir (35 grams needed – 88 meters needed)
Color U: colorway 515 Emerald (35 grams needed – 88 meters needed)
Color V: colorway 412 Forest Green (10 grams needed – 25 meters needed)

There is also an alternative color version created out of Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette’s. For this version, colors A and B are matching Whirlette color and Color C-V are all replaced by the chosen Whirl. The shown example is created out of the following colorways:

Color A: 2 whirlette’s 868 Bilberry needed
Color B: 1 whirlette 860 Ice needed
Color C-V: 1 Scheepjes Whirl 760 Cotton Candyman

Crochet hook used: 3.0mm

Size: The finished size of the Catona version will be 110 cm in height and 110 Cm in width. The finished size of a whirl version will be 90 cm x 90 cm.

All basic crochet stitches are used for this pattern.

The pattern holds clear, written instructions guided by charts. You will work part by part along this pattern.

After purchasing the digital pattern, you can download it as a PDF file in all available languages, including English (US) and Dutch.

Note! You will receive a printable PDF file of the pattern, which is written and constructed as a regular crochet pattern. It still holds all the explanations and background stories around the pattern. You won’t receive the magazine version to download - as this version is full of color and have some extra’s. The magazine version is also meant to be exclusive and worth purchasing. The pattern and stories around them are the same however.

A little errata was detected in the ENGLISH version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Part 1 - R4 is missing one hdc in the small repeat section at the beginning of the Round. The start of the Round has to be like this:

R4 (RS): Attach color B to any st. Ch2 (first hdc), 1hdc in same st, 1hdc in next 2 sts, (2hdc in next st, 1hdc in next 2 sts) 3 times…………

The pattern’s digital version was updated with this little errata on March 15th, 2023. Take note that this has not been edited so far in the magazine’s first print as there was no possibility. Any further prints will have this errata edited.

• 07/04/24 - a small errata was detected in Part 4 - Round 2. This is for both languages. The pattern tells you to work in the flo sts of Round 11 of Part 3 - this must be Round 10 of Part 3 as there is no Round 11. The digital files were updated after this date, however the magazines still hold this errata.
