A new mother was showing me photos of a sweater she was thinking of buying for her daughter; and I gave the standard knitter’s reply, “I can knit that,” and with that I committed to this project. I tend to avoid bobbles. I think the last time I worked a bobble was for my Level 3 hat, and so it is about time I tried them again. Mary Forte provided a very thorough treatment of bobbles in a Stitch Anatomy article in the February–April 2013 issue which I studied very carefully before beginning the project. I’m happy to announce that I’m still not a bobble fan, but I don’t dread them anymore.

As always when I design for babies and children, I try to remember what it was like dressing my own when they were small. This sweater has a large neck opening that is the same for the front and back. I made the sleeves narrower at the cuff so that they don’t need to be rolled up if the sleeves are a bit long. Be sure to check the chest measurement when selecting a size. They are designed with several inches of ease.

I couldn’t decide between pink and light purple for the sample, so I decided to do both—the baby size is pink and the child size is purple.
