Blyde

On Shetland there are some 20 – 22 dialects. That is quite a lot for this group of islands. On the larger islands they each have their own dialect. On the Mainland 11 different dialects can be distinguished.
In Friesland, where I live, they speak a recognized language. But some words in that language are very much like words in other languages and dialects.
Bliid is the Frisian word for ‘Happy” (pronounce it as bleed). In Shetland the word for Glad / Happy is Blyde (same sound as in Hide). Knitting Shetland Lace is what makes me very happy / glad.

Blyde

Op Shetland zijn er zo’n 20 – 22 dialecten. Dat is nogal wat voor zo’n kleine en dunbevolkte eilanden groep. Op de grote eilanden spreken ze allemaal hun eigen dialect en op Mainland zo’n 11 verschillende dialecten.
Friesland, waar ik woon, is een provincie met hun eigen taal. Maar woorden uit het Fries zijn soms terug te vinden in andere talen en dialecten.
Bliid is het friese woord voor blij of tevreden. In het gedeelte waar ik woon, spreek je het uit zoals het er staat.
Op Shetland dialect voor blij is Blyde (spreek uit als: blaijd). Ik word erg blij wanneer ik een shawl brei met Shetland patronen.
