Upon moving to the West Coast of Canada I was overwhelmed by the lush greenery that flourishes year around. Some of the most prevalent plants here are the crawling sprawling wild blackberry bushes. These brambly thickets simply take over. If unchecked, their creeping tentacle-like branches quickly eat up the public pathways from underfoot and from overhead. In the summer months they explode in a public abundance of berries. People all over the city stop with buckets, containers, and open hands to harvest these free gems.

Blackberry Thicket is a slouchy tam-like hat that fits a variety of head (and hair!) sizes. I love that the extra slouch allows me to comfortably tuck my hair up into the hat during rain-showers (or particularly cold days).

Knit bottom up, it is a relatively fast and satisfying project. A repeating colourwork chart is worked throughout with straightforward decreases at the crown. Blackberries are added at the end with French Knots or beads. The stranded colourwork and berries are perfect for using up project leftovers and for adding colour and joy to your day.
